Hey guys,

Been reading through the old posts on different foods, and ive noticed a few people talk about feeding prawns.

Whats the best way to do it?  Do you need to buy the orange cooked prawns?  or the raw blue or green ones?   and should you take the shells off?

and how often should i feed tem to my americans?

When i had africans i used to feed them tinned cooked prawns a couple times a week.
These prawns are a very small type used mainly in chinese cooking.
I have been told you should never feed raw prawns as they contain a chemical to stop them going off which could harm your fish.
Next time you have a feed of cooked prawns share some[shelled] with your fish, they love em.

Cheers

I feed mine cooked prawns. I chop them fine, and feed them.

Only feed enough so that the water doesnt cloud.

If you consistanly feed them prawns, their growth rate, would be awesome!!

And besides the love em

Thanks guys,

so its best to buy them cooked from a deli?  or from a can like sanoptic suggested?  is it possible to buy the raw ones and cook them yourself?  or will the chemicals that keep them fresh still be present?

last question, once theyre cooked and peeled, can you freeze them and just take out a bit at a time to feed them?

thanks again..

i give my oscar a few little bits of the tail end of cooked prawns when i am eating them any only give him maybe 4 or 5 bits about 6 or 8 mm long and i suck some of the saltyness of them first he loves em , when he has had the first bit each time i have them and he knows what i am eating he gets very excited waiting for the second and third bit, he also loves a little strip of bullock heart i bought 1 from the butcher and cut about 50 small strips off it about the size of a jelly bean and i froze them , so i can just take 1 bit out every now and then for him , the dog got the rest of the heart that i didnt cut up . oscar loves those little grass hoppers that are getting around my area at the moment they are only about an inch long just a nice snack size for mr O ,

The breeder that i deal with buys raw prawns & cooks them to feed to his fish,he says the cooking process destroys the chemicals making them safe.He also told me NEVER use bait prawns.
He also freezes em ,but always thaws em to feed the fish.
I always bought the canned type as it was easier for me to buy.
I just rinced them in fresh water first to remove the salt.
Cheers

hi
that is a very debatable statement.
i tried an assortment of different prawns with my fish.
a bag of small cooked/shelled prawns from the local fishmonger,
the fish [tangs] would not touch them. i tasted them, terrible. again i tried cooked school prawns, again met with a refusal to eat, tasted ok to me.
just for fun i tried a bag of frozen green bait prawns. result the fish near jump out of the tank to get them.
when i relayed the experiment to the guy in the bait shop [i know him well] he explained as such; "bait prawns are fresher than any others and they're not treated with [stay fresh] chemicals. why would i sell bait that will not catch fish"   my fish luv'em and over the time i used them i've not had any health issues or unkown losses.
since becomming educated on the quality of prawns, some of the rubbish that i see dished up in clubs and pubs leave me disgusted.
that's all cheers; C

Hi, I have been feeding raw prawn cutlets for months now with no ill effects on my fish, there is nothing mentioned on the pack in regard to chemicals, I thought it was law now to disclose all ingredients.
